Of course on moving day it was the hottest day so far this year, 98 degrees, turning my 10 by 10 foot storage unit into a giant Easy Bake Oven. But despite that, it was one of the easiest moves I've ever perpetrated; we started at 10 a.m. and were done and heading to lunch and a frosty beer by noon.
I can tell it was a good move because I didn't break down in tears even once.
Of course, that was just the outside work; I still have some unpacking to do, but as long as I can do it indoors in air conditioning, life is good.
I've already unpacked the kitchen, the bathroom, the bedroom, my clothes, and all my books. Strange to see them all again after six weeks; I feel like I should immediately pull off the shelf all the books that I don't absolutely love and cart them off to the used book store before they imprint on me again like baby ducks.
I had also packed up all my clothes except about ten shirts, four pairs of shorts, two pairs of pants, and the requisite undergarments and hankies, and I didn't miss any of that other stuff.
And now I'm back at work, half in a fog, thinking of what I'm going to unpack next once I get home again.
Say it in your best squeaky/creepy Tangina voice, a la Poltergeist.
We still haven't closed on the old house, but it is clean and all of our stuff is elsewhere, and I'm on Day 3 of my sojourn. It's cozy but quite comfortable in the two bedroom place with my sweetie, but I think by Day 40 I'll be ready to get my stuff out of storage.
AND I walked to work in about 17 minutes this morning (and that's including the minute I stopped to talk to one of my coworkers as she walked between buildings on campus). Yay!
At WalkScore, you plug in your address and they tell you what amenities are nearby and how walkable (on a scale of 1 to 100) your place is.
I'm moving from a 43 to an 85 in my new apartment! Whee!
A fun little app, and I think it would be useful when you're deciding on hotels when traveling, too - I often try to choose the one that has the most good stuff within walking distance.
I posted a lovely color photo of a diamond tiara on my office door today, a sign I learned from Redz that means: Beware.
I'm not really cranky, just tired and despondent and ready for my life to have a little less upheaval in it. Unfortunately, it's about to get worse before it can get better: a big garage sale this weekend, where we try to sell everything except the garage in order to be able to move into two small apartments, only one of which will be ready next week when we sell the garage, and the rest of the house with it.
The one that will be ready next week is my sweetie's apartment. My apartment will be ready six weeks after that, so we will be in pretty close quarters in the interim.
I've been self-medicating with baked goods.
I like the apartments, and I love the idea of downsizing our stuff, but we are ripping off this Band-Aid really fast.
So send all positive cosmic whirlies my way that I will have fun and not play too many wrong notes and that folks will generally have a great time listening.
And the weekend after this, I'll be getting ready for the big move, and the beginning of my peripatetic wanderings, Cain-like, over the face of the earth for six weeks until my apartment is ready. Except mostly I'll be staying with my dear sweetie and Redz.
Today I moved cubicles from the fourth floor to the third floor of the same building. I lost some square footage and some nice cabinets, but gained a door, so it's a pretty good trade-off.
It's one of those cube doors with the long skinny window next to it. I have to think of something good to paper it over with -- maybe a big long scarf? -- so nobody can see what I'm doing in here when the door's closed.
